Day 1 - Sept 15

Private equity, LP perspectives, GP narratives, country and sector focus tracks

Session I

Fireside chat: The Battle for Southeast Asia
with Jeffrey Perlman, Warburg Pincus

Session II

From WeWork washout to COVID-19 calamity:
How the macro context of private investment has shifted.

In this panel, comprising prominent PE, growth-stage VCs, limited partners and research experts, we will seek to unravel the events that have unfolded since the dramatic fallout of the WeWork public outing in August 2019 leading to concerns on cash-burn and mega funding rounds. Just when the conversations started veering towards sustainability and path to profitability, the coronavirus outbreak by the end of December 2019 brought industries and economies to a virtual standstill. The pandemic is expected to continue till the year-end by various estimates.

Session III

The LP Quarter:
The case for South-East Asia

With the US-China trade row, the Brexit saga, the upcoming US Presidential elections and the global pandemic governing the economic landscape, this panel will seek the cover the perspective from the LPs’ corner on their investment outlook and risk-balancing strategies for the medium term.

Session IV

ESG and impact investing:
Is the time ripe for a build-out?

More and more businesses are applying non-financial factors such as ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles while investing. And, this trend is building out in the private equity space as well with larger impact vehicles and stricter guidelines when it comes to choosing a potential investment bet.

Session V

Club deals, secondaries, debt & cross-border transactions:
The GP’s perspective on what is changing in the Asian PE industry

Private equity giants who invest across the world have collected record capital and have amassed trillions in assets under management at the end of 2019. So, with a pause on deal-making for the good part of the year, how are private equity managers handling their cash pile.

Session VI

Country Focus Fireside Chat:
India

This two-member panel will explore the investment outlook, fundraising, valuations, exits and hot sectoral trends in the medium term in India.

Day 2 - Sept 16

Venture capital investment outlook & trends, fireside chats with Unicorns & future growth sectors

Session I

Keynote Presentation:
The Evolving Deep-tech Investment Landscape in Southeast Asia

with Paul Santos, Managing Partner, Wavemaker Partners.

Session II

VC fundraising trends in 2020 and the road ahead:
How to navigate the bumpy trail?

Fundraising efforts by Southeast Asia-based venture capital (VC) firms are in the market to raise $4.97 billion, per our proprietary deal data. In this panel, we will take a look at the fundraising experiences and bottlenecks faced by fund managers to close their vehicles.

Session III

Startup resilience:
Stories of survival and grit

In this session, we will feature a curated mix of panel comprising founders who survived the startup winter and turbulence the global coronoviraus brought to their businesses. We will learn from them how they pivoted, cut costs, took tough decisions, closed non-core businesses, let go staff, tapped novel financing avenues to stay afloat.

Session IV

Founders tap new financing avenues to beat funding winter

In this panel, we will explore new financing options such as venture debt, convertible loans, structured equity, direct investments from family offices, working capital funding that founders secured to grow their business while still holding on to their equity stakes.

Session V

Secondaries, co-investments, VC mergers & surge in corporate venture capital activity: Is that the way forward in the absence of exit routes in SE Asia?

In this panel we will explore the various on-ground trends we have been reporting that include co-investments and even possibilities of a merger given the tight exit environment. With lacklustre public markets, the IPO option in south-east Asia has always been considered virtually non-existent.

Session VI

Chinese capital continues to flow into SE Asia

In this panel, we will trace the journey of Chinese funds and corporate investments in SE Asian and Indian startups.
