Fireside Chat: The Japanese LP perspective: Alternatives, liquidity and the search for durable returns

  • Yoshi Kiguchi, Chief Investment Officer, Pension Fund of Japanese Corporations
  • In conversation with Sonoko Watanabe, Senior Consulting Executive Officer, Nikkei Inc.

Japan is becoming one of the most closely watched private markets in Asia, but the more important question for institutional investors is how alternatives fit into a portfolio built to deliver durable returns over the long term. As Japanese pensions reassess portfolios shaped by decades of low rates, where do private equity, private credit and other alternatives now belong, and how should investors balance return, liquidity and risk? This fireside will examine what Japanese LPs need to see before backing a private-markets manager, how they think about illiquidity and portfolio construction, and how Japan, the rest of Asia, the US and Europe compete for allocation. It will also explore a question with direct relevance for GPs across the region: why has Japanese institutional capital remained difficult to access, and what do managers often misunderstand about raising from Japan? Drawing on more than three decades in investment and risk management, Yoshi Kiguchi will offer an allocator’s view on where conviction is building and what could shape the next phase of Japanese capital in private markets.
