Across Southeast Asia, one of the biggest constraints on private-market growth is increasingly the availability of patient institutional capital willing to move early. As global LPs become more selective, emerging managers face a tougher path to institutional backing, while companies and new sectors can struggle to attract capital before their track records are fully established. Khazanah is testing a different model through Dana Impak and Jelawang Capital: anchoring emerging Malaysian managers, partnering established regional funds, crowding in other investors and using long-term capital to help build companies and strategic ecosystems. But when should an institutional investor move where commercial capital will not? How can anchor commitments help turn first- and second-time managers into durable institutional franchises rather than create dependency? What does it take to crowd private capital behind them, and how should returns, governance and accountability be measured alongside ecosystem development? Drawing on Malaysia’s experience, this fireside will examine the changing role of institutional capital in building stronger private markets across Southeast Asia.
